To summarise, we have worked together over the past eight months, training in one hour sessions one a two to three times a week basis.

I have started to train with Martyn in summer 2013, first as an online client, with a weekly personal check in, later moving to a combination of personal and online training. My main aim was to increase strength while learning more about proper form and become a more confident and educated lifter to be able to strength train myself. I think the fact that Martyn is now my coach for almost 3 years speaks for itself – we have moved on from the basics and every year we agree new goals, which are motivating and fun at the same time, so they make the training enjoyable. We train 3 times a week together in his dedicated gym and I also have a specific programme written for my weekend workout. The highlights of last year have been building up my upper body strength and achieving my first chin-up, which have been a long term goal of mine and a fitness photo-shoot we have done to mark my 40th birthday – the experience of going through the preparation phase for the shoot and the shoot itself was a fantastic experience and I am definitely in the best shape of my life! As a Financial industry I.T. Manager responsible for server infrastructure operational and managing a team of I.T. specialists, it is important to my physical and mental well-being for me to maintain a basic level of physical fitness and try to create a semblance of work life balance. Martyn has helped me to try to create this balance over the past 7 months. I have been training twice weekly with Martyn since November 2007.

I originally went to him because I had been having severe hip pain that I attributed to a muscle and posture imbalance brought on my a lack of fitness and my sedentary professional life. He worked with me to strengthen and target my legs particularly working in conjunction with the onsite physiotherapist at Fitness First (the local gym). In March of this year my hip problem was identified as dysplasia requiring a serious operation. Martyn has been pivotal in keeping me motivated and as fit as possible leading up to my operation despite limitations on the exercise I am able to do.

Martyn regularly updates my workout and tailors it to suit my requirements by listening to my feedback and comments. He has kept me interested and motivated, which has been a significant challenge for both of us in recent months.

I do not hesitate in recommending Martyn Sklayne as a personal trainer. He is knowledgable and innovative and he has a lively personality which is a breath of fresh air if you’ve had a difficult day. He intuitively understands when to push you further and when you have been stretched to your limits. Martyn Sklayne has been my personal trainer since September 2007. My time with Martyn is not only successful from a fitness perspective, but was also very enjoyable.

Martyn is one of those personal trainers that is fully focused on the client during the training sessions (many other trainers I have observed have a tendency to check out others in the gym or chat while their client exercises), with a keen eye for technique, and constantly varying exercises to prevent boredom and to give the whole body a well balanced work-out.

Martyn was my personal trainer between Oct 08 and June 10. Each session was extremely well-structured with a good range of well-explained (and demonstrated) exercises suitable for my body type. The well-structured nature of the sessions extended to a completely new set of exercises every six weeks or so.

My name is Dave Hargrave and I work for Svenska Handelsbanken here in London. I have been a client of Martyn’s for around 8 months. I would see Martyn for three sessions at the start of each 6 week period for a new programme. He is the fourth personal trainer I have had in the last 5 years so I have been able to compare and contrast his training methods.

Martyn came across as having an extensive knowledge of gym training and as someone with a strong interest in keeping this knowledge current and up to date.

Exercises and routines were clearly explained and documented and set in accordance with my training objectives. After going through each programme with Martyn, I was easily able to follow the programme for the remainder of he period on my own, but Martyn was always available to clarify any questions I had.

Martyn was especially very strong on technique and form when exercising- this was right considered a critical aspect of training.

I’ve have trained with many so called personal trainers over the years. If you are reading this today, I believe you are a step closer to what I can honestly call it a real life-changing decision. We’re a diverse bunch – different nationalities, different styles, and perhaps even different philosophies. But the big picture remains the same. In one way or the other we are all trying to make this world a healthier place by starting from ourselves. But how can one know what’s the right way to go about it? I have tried a number of gyms and personal trainers from unknown ones to celebrity ones. At the time I was convinced that bodywork wasn’t for me. My main goal was to gain some body definition, loose weight and be able to maintain it. Crazy diets? I did them all… It wasn’t working… I had even a lipo sculpture procedure done as I got so frustrated for not finding anyone who could guide me through. But then I found my coach Martyn! Meeting Martyn couldn’t have come at a better time.. He has completely changed the way I look, the way I stand and the way I move. It also started a chain reaction of healthier living. From his coaching I started to eat appropriately and began to go for long hours of walks with my dogs in the park daily. I even started a Master in osteopathy. No - I didn’t get a place at college to undertake this Master because I trained with Martyn. But I do think the mind-body element of the exercise helped to sharpen my focus, energize my spirit and boost my confidence - and those things definitely contributed to me getting the place at the college I wanted and starting a new challenge in my life… Before I met Martyn I had never experienced such a life-changing approach to body work. I had the good fortune of training with Martyn Sklayne for a 4-month period. When I came to him I had trained off and on, mostly focused on spinning classes and other cardio, and limited weight training experience. I was not overweight, but looking to gain strength and improve body composition. Over our time together, I became so much stronger. I was unable to perform many basic body weight exercises: I couldn’t do a single push up nor could I lower my own body weight from the top of a chin up position. With each successive session, my strength increased, I lifted heavier, and my measurements taken during bi- weekly biosignature assessments decreased. I’ve even had several friends comment on the shape and definition in my arms and shoulders. Martyn is extremely disciplined and professional. Sessions always started with a smile and handshake. This professionalism extended to his speedy replies, always within 24 hours, of any emails I sent to him. He would provide detailed replies, for example, to my questions related to the purpose of particular exercise movements. He would even advise on the best meal options from menus I’d send him to restaurants I had to attend for work functions. Aside from the workouts, Martyn is a genuinely nice person and pleasure to be around – extremely important when training at 6 am and it’s still dark outside! He truly cares about his clients achieving their goals and wants to see them succeed; an often-underestimated quality in a PT, yet one I believe to be one of the most important.
